What would become the Mazda Motor Corporation was initially founded in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, which developed and produced compressed cork. This was changed to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd in 1927, once the company rebuilt after a devastating fire destroyed 70% of its facilities.
